Disclosure: we make ThumbnailPeak, which sells AI thumbnails, so read our prices as one option among several. Every price below was read from a public page on 1 November 2026, signed out, from a US address, in US dollars. We didn't buy anything or contact anyone.

A YouTube thumbnail costs anywhere from a few cents to a few hundred dollars. Here's what we found when we read the prices on one day:

  • The typical thumbnail gig on Fiverr starts at $5. Of the 16,620 gigs in Fiverr's thumbnail category, 61% start under $10. Fiverr adds a buyer fee, so a $5 gig costs $8.78.
  • The designers you see first charge more. Fiverr's first results start at a median of $15, PeoplePerHour's at $25 and Dribbble's at $20. Fiverr says its average thumbnail job is $18.
  • Country matters. Sellers in Bangladesh start at a median of $10 a thumbnail, in Pakistan $15, in India $20, in the UK $26.25 and in the US $30.
  • Agencies charge $68 to $299 a thumbnail, with a minimum order or a yearly plan.
  • AI costs cents. One thumbnail from ThumbnailPeak's Generate costs about 30 cents on a credit pack. Through Google's developer tools, a Nano Banana picture costs 3 to 13 cents.
  • The cheapest price buys the least. A starting package is usually one simple thumbnail, delivered in a day, often with no source file.

A chart of what one YouTube thumbnail costs, on a scale where each step is about three times the last. AI tools: Nano Banana through Google's developer tools 3–13 cents; ThumbnailPeak Generate, batch of three on Pro, 13 cents each; one on a credit pack, 30 cents. Designers: Fiverr's typical gig starting price $5, or $8.78 with the buyer fee; Fiverr's first-page gigs $15, or $19.33 with the fee; Fiverr's own average thumbnail job $18; Dribbble designers $20; PeoplePerHour offers $25; US sellers $30; Upwork's guide for one custom thumbnail $25–$100; an agency on a weekly yearly plan about $68; an agency per thumbnail, minimum 4, $199–$299.

What freelance designers charge

Fiverr is the biggest marketplace for this. Its Thumbnails Design category held 16,620 gigs on 1 November. Using Fiverr's own price filter, 61% start under $10 and 85% under $15, and the cheapest a gig can be is $5, so the middle gig starts at $5. Fiverr's own hiring guide says: "an average fee of … $18 for thumbnail design jobs."

The gigs Fiverr shows first cost more. We opened all 142 thumbnail gigs on the first pages of its search and category listings. Their starting prices had a median of $15, with the middle half between $5 and $20. These are mostly established sellers: new sellers make up 87% of the category but only 17 of those 142 gigs. Fiverr's Top Rated sellers started at a median of $25.

On top of that, Fiverr adds a buyer fee at checkout: 5.5% of the order plus $3.50 on orders under $200, before tax. So a $5 gig costs $8.78, a $10 gig $14.05 and a $15 gig $19.33.

PeoplePerHour: all 109 results for "youtube thumbnail" (89 that sell thumbnails, from 64 sellers) started at a median of $25, with the middle half between $15 and $30. No offer was under $10.

Dribbble: 22 thumbnail services started at a median of $20. Its PRO designers asked more: $50, $50, from $100, and $350.

Upwork shows hourly rates: a median of $17.50 an hour across the 26 profiles we could read. Most of them also take fixed-price jobs, and Upwork's own guide puts "Single custom thumbnail" at "$25–$100 /project", a batch for 3 to 10 videos at $100 to $500, and a channel's whole thumbnail system, templates and style guide included, at $500 to $1,500 or more.

What the cheapest package actually includes

A starting price is the cheapest package on the page, not what most buyers pay. On the 142 Fiverr gigs we opened, the cheapest package:

  • was one thumbnail in 140 of them;
  • arrived in a day in 63%;
  • had unlimited revisions in 46%, and 1 to 3 in most of the rest;
  • included the source file (the editable PSD) in only 13%;
  • was limited in scope in 29 of them, with lines like "1 character, simple background".

Most gigs have three packages. The middle ones cost a median of $10 for Basic, $25 for Standard and $50 for Premium. The bigger packages are usually more thumbnails (Premium held 5 or 10 in 42 gigs) or a more detailed design at $25 to $35.

How country changes the price

Designers in different countries charge very different prices for similar packages:

A bar chart of the median starting price per seller by the designer's country, across Fiverr, PeoplePerHour, Dribbble and Legiit: Bangladesh $10, Sri Lanka $13.75, Pakistan $15, Indonesia $15, Philippines $15, Germany $15, India $20, Morocco $20, Ukraine $20, Nigeria $22.50, United Kingdom $26.25, United States $30.

Thumbnail design prices in India: Indian sellers on the first Fiverr pages started at a median of $17.50, and $20 across marketplaces. But that's the ones who rank first. Across all 3,970 Indian gigs in Fiverr's category, 72% start under $10.

Thumbnail design prices in the USA: US sellers were rare on the pages we read: 9 in all, with a median of $30. On PeoplePerHour, the 6 US sellers asked a median of $35 and the 10 UK sellers $26.25.

Pakistan and Bangladesh supply most of the marketplace: on Fiverr, a third of the category's gigs are from Pakistan and an eighth from Bangladesh. Their sellers started at a median of $15 and $10.

Price isn't a measure of quality here. A seller's level on Fiverr mattered more than their country or their number of reviews: gigs with 5,000 ratings or more still started at a median of $15.

What agencies charge

Agencies that design for big channels publish very different prices:

  • Clickables: "$199 per credit", one thumbnail design per credit, or $299 with concept sketches, with a minimum of 4. Its cheapest order is $796.
  • Dava Studios: "1 Thumbnail/wk $295 /mo", billed monthly on a 12-month commitment: about $68 a thumbnail.

What you pay for there is someone who plans the idea with you, tests versions and keeps your channel's look consistent, week after week.

What AI costs

ThumbnailPeak's Generate: a free account comes with 12 credits, enough for four thumbnails. After that, a $10 credit pack adds 100 credits that never expire: one thumbnail uses 3 credits, so about 30 cents, and a batch of three uses 6, so about 20 cents each. Pro is $20 a month for 300 credits, which brings a batch of three to about 13 cents a thumbnail. Free downloads carry a small ThumbnailPeak mark; a pack or Pro removes it.

Gemini's Nano Banana: free in the Gemini app, within limits Google doesn't publish as a number. Through Google's developer tools, a picture costs between 3 and 13 cents, depending on the model.

Other AI thumbnail tools charge per month. On 1 November, ThumbnailCreator started at US$29 a month for 50 thumbnails (about 58 cents each), and Adobe Express Premium at US$9.99 a month for 250 generative credits. Our Adobe Express and ThumbnailCreator comparisons go into what those buy.

The catch with AI is that you're the art director. A designer asks what your video is about; an AI tool needs to be told, or needs to read your video. Our tests of Nano Banana and ChatGPT show what happens when it only gets a title: it invents.

Designer or AI?

A designer is worth it when:

  • you want an original concept, not a version of a common one;
  • you need a consistent look across every video, and someone to keep it;
  • your thumbnail needs real photo work: cutting you out cleanly, matching light, retouching;
  • you want someone to talk to about the idea.

AI makes sense when:

  • you publish often and $15 to $30 a video adds up (a weekly upload is $780 to $1,560 a year at those prices);
  • you want several ideas to choose from before committing;
  • you need it in minutes, not a day or four;
  • you're testing thumbnails and want more versions than a designer's package includes.

Many creators do both: AI for ideas and quick versions, a designer for the videos that matter most. Whichever you use, check the result before it goes live. A critique tells you what to fix, and Preview shows it in a real YouTube feed, free.

How we read the prices, all on 1 November 2026, signed out from a US address: Fiverr's search for "youtube thumbnail" (pages 1–3, default order) and its Thumbnails Design category (pages 1–2, default order), every gig page opened, 142 thumbnail gigs kept, plus the whole category's counts from Fiverr's own budget and country filters; PeoplePerHour's search for "youtube thumbnail", all 109 results, 89 kept; Dribbble's 22 thumbnail services; Legiit's thumbnail category, 5 of 7 kept; Upwork's hire page and talent search pages 1–2, 26 profiles. Starting prices are each gig's cheapest package. Country medians use one value per seller across the four fixed-price marketplaces, for countries with at least 5 sellers. Fiverr's search stopped us with a captcha after about 170 page loads, so the country filters for some countries weren't read. Agency prices are from their own pricing pages. AI prices are the published prices on the same day. ThumbnailPeak is not affiliated with any of these companies.
