How to resize an image for a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Add your image. Drop it anywhere on the page, browse for it, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl/Cmd + V. JPG, PNG and WebP all work.
  2. Choose crop or fit. Crop to fill covers the whole 16:9 frame, and you drag the picture to choose which part stays. Fit + blur and Fit + color keep the whole picture and fill the sides with a blurred copy of it or a plain color.
  3. Download it. It saves as a JPG at exactly 1280×720, ready to upload in YouTube Studio. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

YouTube thumbnail size

YouTube's help page for custom thumbnails asks for a 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. Since October 2025 the file can be up to 50MB when you upload from a computer, but the YouTube mobile app still takes only 2MB.

1280×720 is the size most guides quote, and it is a good upload: it meets every requirement, and it is the smallest size a thumbnail A/B test takes without YouTube dropping the whole test to 480p. YouTube now accepts up to 3840×2160 for big screens, which is worth it only when your source really has that much detail. The YouTube thumbnail size guide explains which size to export. The resizer saves a high-quality JPG, which at 1280×720 is normally well under 2MB.

Crop or fit: which to choose

YouTube never refuses a thumbnail for its shape. It shrinks a 4:3, square or vertical picture into the 16:9 frame with black bars, so part of the space your thumbnail competes in is left empty. Fitting it yourself lets you decide what fills the frame.

  • Crop to fill uses the whole frame but cuts part of the picture off: an eighth of the height at the top and at the bottom of a 4:3 photo. Drag to keep what matters, and watch for text near the edges.
  • Fit + blur keeps everything and fills the sides with a blurred copy of the picture, so it looks designed rather than letterboxed.
  • Fit + color keeps everything on a plain background: black, white or any color you pick.

We fitted one 4:3 thumbnail five ways and scored each with our AI critique. Cropping cut off the headline and scored lowest, and the blurred background scored about the same as black bars. If you still have the original photo or design file, rebuilding the thumbnail at 16:9 beat every fit. See the five versions side by side.

Before you upload

Once it is the right size, see it the way viewers will: preview your thumbnail on YouTube beside real videos on the home page, in search and on mobile, or get an AI critique of it. Grabbing art from an existing video? The YouTube Thumbnail Downloader pulls every size. If YouTube still refuses the file, here is why a thumbnail upload fails.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

16:9, at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. 1280×720 is the standard size and meets every requirement. YouTube accepts up to 3840×2160, and files up to 50MB from a computer or 2MB from the YouTube mobile app.

Will resizing make my thumbnail blurry?

Shrinking a larger image keeps it sharp. Enlarging a small one can't add detail that isn't there: a 640-pixel screenshot stretched to 1280×720 is a bigger file, not a sharper picture. Start from the largest copy of the image you have.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The resizing happens in your browser, so the image never leaves your device while you resize and download it.

Does YouTube resize thumbnails automatically?

It scales your thumbnail down for the home page, search, suggested videos and TV, but it doesn't change its shape. A picture that isn't 16:9 is shown with black bars in most places, and cropped on a phone's channel page. Fit it to 16:9 before you upload so you decide what fills the frame.

Can I resize a thumbnail on my phone?

Yes. The resizer works in a phone's browser: tap to choose a photo, drag to frame it, and download. If you will upload from the YouTube app, the file must be under 2MB, and the resizer warns you when it isn't.

Is the thumbnail resizer free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you resize.
